Pregnancy is an exciting period in your life, but it can also be overwhelming. Changes that occur rather rapidly in your body can have you feeling elated one day and depressed the next. Unfortunately, some women become so concerned about their body image while pregnant that they develop an eating disorder. This, of course, is dangerous for both the baby and the mother.

Watch this video to learn how other women coped with the changes in their body image while pregnant, and how they were able to maintain their self-confidence. Remember, you are supposed to gain weight during this time, so try not to feel bad when it happens.

For more information about having a healthy pregnancy or ob-gyn services, contact the team at OB-GYN Associates in Alabama. Give us a call at (888) 805-2439 today to schedule an appointment or to speak to someone about any concerns you have about your body image during this time.

How to Help Your Daughter Prepare for Her First Appointment with the Gynecologist

    Last updated 4 months ago

A young woman’s first visit to the gynecologist can be one that she anticipates with some degree of anxiety. This typically stems from not knowing what to expect, reservations about modesty, or having heard inaccurate accounts about what it’s really like. As a parent, you can help ease your daughter’s tensions and prepare her for a positive first gynecologist visit by following these tips:

Acknowledge and Validate Her Concerns. Gynecologist visits may be routine to you, and it’s easy to forget the feelings you may have experienced before your first visit since you are familiar with the process. Let your daughter know that you understand that she may be anxious or concerned about pain, and that it’s perfectly normal to feel that way.

Stress the Importance of Women’s Health Exams. Explain that the female reproductive system is incredibly complex, which means there are countless complications that can occur. Don’t try to use fear of disease as a motivator, but do explain that many female problems can be easily treated and corrected when caught early, and that early detection requires regular women’s health exams.

Set Her Inhibitions at Ease. Your daughter may be uncomfortable with the idea of discussing such a private aspect of herself with a stranger. She may also be embarrassed or uncomfortable with the idea of doing so in your presence. Let her know that, while you are glad to be in the room if she wants, you don’t have to be. She can ask the gynecologist any questions she has about sex, birth control, STDs, or any other women’s health issues in full confidence.

Let Her Know What to Expect. Be honest in explaining that certain parts of the exam can be uncomfortable, but that the physical exam is brief and doesn’t cause any real pain. Explain all the other portions of the visit so that she can have some perspective on the entire experience.

If your daughter is ready for her first gynecology visit, or if you are in need of a check-up yourself, don’t hesitate to contact OB-GYN Associates. Call (888) 805-2439 today to set up an appointment.

Are You Holding Back Important Information About Your Health When You See the Doctor?

    Last updated 4 months ago

Forgetfulness, pain, embarrassment, fear, shame: these are just some of the reasons that women may not be completely forthcoming with their gynecologist. However, withholding information about your health or family medical history can have some serious consequences in the long term. It can make potentially dangerous conditions more difficult to diagnose, make small issues appear to be bigger than they are, and cause you to suffer needlessly with easy-to-treat conditions. Always tell your gynecologist if:

You are experiencing any pain or abnormal discharge. If you have discharge that is oddly colored or malodorous, you may be embarrassed to tell your doctor about it. These are often symptoms of vaginal infections or STDs, however, so it’s vital that you discuss them with your gynecologist as soon as possible. Don’t worry—he or she has seen it all before and is not going to judge you. A simple test or two and some medication may just save your life, and it will certainly make you feel more comfortable.

You have more than one sexual partner. It’s a rare exception when your sex life is anyone else’s business, but your gynecologist is definitely one of those exceptions. In addition to increasing the risk of STDs, having multiple sexual partners can increase your risk for various infections if you use certain types of birth control. It’s also doubly important that you be aware of and report any changes in your reproductive health if you have recently changed sexual partners or have multiple partners.

You’re having trouble in the bedroom. Many women suffer needlessly with pain during intercourse that results from lubrication problems. Oftentimes, this is an easy fix, but it can be a symptom of an underlying condition. Don’t be afraid to discuss other sexual problems, too, such as difficulty becoming aroused or achieving orgasm—that’s what your doctor is there for.

At OB-GYN Associates of Alabama, we will always treat you with respect and integrity, no matter what your medical issue might be. Contact us today by calling (888) 805-2439 to schedule your next appointment to discuss your health.
